Clearweld Coatings

Clearweld coatings are solvent-based materials which allow two pieces of plastic to be laser welded together using an infrared (IR) and near infrared (NIR) laser welding system. They can be used on a wide range of plastic substrates, including but not limited to: ABS, COC, PA 12, PA 6, PBT, PC, HDPE, LDPE< PEEK, PMMA, PP< PS, PSU, and many others. The basic color of Clearweld solutions is green; however, the color is diminished after the coating has been laser welded. This allows the substrate to have a wide range of color combinations when using a laser welding system. Coatings can also be used in laser welding-based applications where both the top and bottom plastic substrates are laser-transmissive. Clearweld provides virtually limitless color flexibility, including transparent and water-white materials. Our technology allows plastic product designers and engineers to overcome challenges and obstacles presented by light curable adhesives and solvent bonds.

Clearweld near infrared laser welding solutions in the 900 series

Clearweld LD 900 Series

Clearweld LD 900 Series were developed to provide the same characteristics as the original Clearweld 100 and 200 Series coatings, but at a lower cost. The Clearweld 900 series achieves strong bonds on a wide array of substrates, including but not limited to: PC, PMMA, PP, HDPE, PA6, COC and PS. Welding with low surface energy polymers is also possible when assisted by a pre-treatment process. Clearweld coatings can be dispensed on a substrate using a wide array of methods, including: ultrasonic spray, ink-jet printer, pen plotter, spin coating, drop cast, and any method that deposits solvent-based solutions. Standard solutions are either acetone or ethanol based, depending on the required concentrations, dry speeds and application. By request, alternative solvents may be used, such as isopropanol, methyl ethyl ketone and diacetone alcohol. Subdermal cytotoxicity tests show that Clearweld 900 Series coatings are suitable for biomedical based applications.  However, all medical devices must be tested by the customer in their final form for FDA approval.

Clearweld LD 100 & 200 Series

Clearweld 100 and 200 Series coatings are biocompatible and have undergone cytotoxicity testing for use in medical devices. The Clearweld 100 and 200 series can achieve strong bonds on a wide array of substrates, including but not limited to: PC, PMMA, PP, HDPE, PA6, COC and PS. Welding with low surface energy polymers is also possible when assisted by a pre-treatment process. Standard solutions are either acetone or ethanol based, depending on the required concentrations, dry speeds and application. By request, alternative solvents may be used, such as isopropanol, methyl ethyl ketone and diacetone alcohol. These customized coatings meet USP Class VI standards for FDA approval. All medical devices must be tested by the customer in their final form for FDA approval.
